208 ensemble

Created in 2014 by cellist Jake Saunders and composer
David Biedenbender, 208 ensemble brings progressive chamber music by
some of the most innovative composers writing today to Boise, Idaho.
It’s members are dedicated to cultivating enthusiasm in Boise for a
brand of music that exists where the refinement of classical
performance meets the visceral energy of a rock concert.
208 ensemble is a dynamic, multi-instrumental contemporary music
ensemble. Cellist Jake Saunders, violinist Geoffrey hill, violist
Emily Jones, and Pianist Betsi Hodges represent some of the highest
caliber classical musicians in Idaho. These core members have received
training from top institutions throughout the country, and currently
serve principal positions in the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Opera Idaho orchestra, and contribute regularly to the Boise Baroque
Orchestra, LED, Classical Revolution: Boise, and the Boise
Philharmonic String Quartet. Since its debut in November 2014, 208
ensemble has been a featured artist at Treefort Music Fest 2015 and
2016, and has presented featured programs at the Sapphire Room, MING
Studios, RadioBoise, Cinder Wines, and the Morrison Center for the
Performing Arts. 208 ensemble frequently collaborates with local
artists, including Dr. Linda Kline-Lamar, Jeffrey Barker, Thomas Paul,
Brian Vance, Lindsay Edwards, Matthew Tutsky and Bill Kloppenburg. In
February 2015, the ensemble shared the stage with international
touring artist Emily Wells.

4 Hour Woody

4 Hour Woody is veteran three-piece high energy blues-rock band that has recorded 4 CDs of original material. The members currently live in Boise and the band is looking for local and regional performing opportunities. 4 Hour Woody plays a melodic, danceable variety of music in what could be roughly characterized as a “retro-blues-rock” style. The band members have extensive playing, recording and touring experience. The members are:

Homer Wise – vocals/ bass/ keyboards. Homer played in several bands that wrote and performed original material, most notably “Jupiter Symphony” which had its videos featured on MTV’s basement tapes.

Jim Fisher  – acoustic/electronic drums/percussion. Jimmy has played with Homer in several projects including Jupiter Symphony and Naked Ear.

Dan Downs – vocals/electric and acoustic and slide guitars, percussion, mixing, production. Originally, from Michigan, Dan has toured extensively throughout the Midwest and has opened arena shows for Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Ruby Starr (Black Oak) and The Look.

A Seasonal Disguise

A Seasonal Disguise is a band from Boise, Idaho, USA.

Conceptualized in 2004, the band has gone on to release four full length albums, one EP and play countless shows in various forms.

A Seasonal Disguise has shared the stage with the likes of: Built To Spill, Frog Eyes, Alec Ounsworth (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Clem Snide, Dave Dondero, Heligoats, Tartufi, Finn Riggins, and The Cave Singers among others.

2013 finds them settling into a new incarnation and beginning work on the follow up to 2012’s Waterfowl Of Eastern Canada.

Look for them at home and abroad this summer/fall.

A Tasty Jamm

Formed in late 2009, we consider ourselves more of a ”remake” band than a cover band that likes to put our own spin on songs to make them ”Tasty”. Mostly 70’s/80’s/90’s set lists, but we delve into other decades as well. We do a few sweet medleys and versions of familiar songs you won’t hear anywhere else. We can perform as a full band or as an acoustic quartet w/ our drummer playing a “Cajon” (wooden percussion box) instead of a drum kit, and we also have an electronic drum kit available for smaller venues. Our band features local radio personality and traffic reporter Robin Scott on lead vocals and harmonies. Rob and Robin have been performing together as a duo since 1994 and decided to add some great musicians to the group, what resulted is the band you see here. Our goal is to perform songs that we enjoy playing in hopes that the energy and passion will emotionally engage anyone who is listening. Come check us out, we don’t suck! Nicknamed ’Americana Sweethearts’ by weekly local arts & culture rag, The Boise Weekly, a.k.a. Belle are also commonly referred to as Boise’s ”Indie – Alt – Country Darlings” — certainly there is an edge to their Americana – roots rock n roll, as listening to their debut album, ”Disappearing Night” reveals.

The album came out in late December 2011, spent several weeks in the Top 20 Best Sellers list at The Record Exchange and, in fact, ”Disappearing NIght” made it into the Ten Top Selling Local Albums of 2012!

The track ”Austin Calling” continues to get airplay on the Treasure Valley’s largest commercial radio station, The River 94.9fm. a.k.a. Belle are highly championed by their morning host, Tim Johnstone, as well as being favorites of Carl Scheider, DJ at (NPR affiliated) KBSU. ”Living Room Radio,” a Friday afternoon show on 89.9fm Radio Boise, listed ’Disappearing Night’ as one of their top albums of the year.

a.k.a. Belle formed in 2008, after Catherine Crooks Merrick (vocals, guitars, banjo) returned home to Boise after several years of living and performing under the moniker Belle
of Les Bois in Manchester, England. She recruited long time accomplice Sam Merrick to play guitar (ex-Hillfolk Noir, The Nymphs, The Leaving Trains). (Yes, they are married.)

No strangers to the music business, each has worked with or supported some famous names (Curtis Stigers; Bill Kirchen; Doug Martsch from Built to Spill; John Doe & Exene Cervenka from LA band X; Iggy Pop; Elizabeth Cook; Holly Golightly, Lydia Loveless…just to name a few)

Current live shows feature Louis McFarland on percussion and Chris Galli on stand up bass; and Kayleigh Jack on violin, vocals and guitar.

Christmas 2010’s Moxie Java local artist/band compilation includes a.k.a. Belle’s holiday hit, “I’m Giving Mice Elf to You” which has been on permanent rotation on The River’s Morning Show every Christmas since its release.

”For a Fool,” was the inspiration for a stop motion painting/animation video by Boise artist, Shasta Nash. Shasta used the acoustic version of the song (written & recorded in England), which was shown at the 2011 ”208 Music Video Show” and took 1st prize.

Work on their 2nd album (working title ’The Devil Loves You’), has begun at AudioLab Recording Studios, and the band anticipate its release sometime this spring. The direction is slightly darker, including themes of time travel and urban myths about a serial killer who lives in Boise’s foothills.

For the past five or so years, I have been able to make a living on music in Boise. I have played acoustic 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music for geriatric facilities. Lots of interesting personalities, especially in the Memory Care Unit. I believe playing in bars is fun for a musical purpose it is mediocre at best. I believe music affects us biologically in a way that regresses disease. I will head to New Orleans at the end of the summer for a Music Therapy degree, but until then I am looking to gig. Sometimes my friends like to come along too.

Addam Chavarria

Addam is a rising 19 year-old singer and songwriter. His music is a combination of Folk. Rock. Blues and a little contemporary Folk.

He has been playing piano since he was seven, and composing and singing since he was twelve. Addam participated in choir throughout high school and during his freshmen year he taught himself how to play the ukulele and the guitar.
Addam’s dedication and commitment is evident in his passion and love for music. He started his music career in high school performing in the streets. Addam’s songs and lyrics come from his personal experiences and his quest to make a difference and spark an attitude of change in all who listen to his music. His desire is to instill hope and inspiration, and to help overcome the many trials in our lives. Addam’s first album, “Chasing Stars” is the culmination of overcoming trials and shooting for the stars! Farewell was written as a tribute to his father who recently pasted away.

Addam’s music influences and inspirations include Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Aaron Lewis, Cat Stevens, Chopin, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Johnny Cash. Addam’s music is soothing to the soul, heartfelt and will certainly have you wanting more from this young and talented artist.

He has played in various locations across the Treasure Valley, including The Artistblue Gallery, The Crescent Brewery, the opening of The Village in Meridian and for shows at The Grove Hotel and BSU.

Ana Lete

In January, 2015, Christi Green, Ana Lete’s classical guitar
instructor, mentor, and friend of 2.5 years passed away from
complications following an ankle surgery after a skiing accident. With
this unexpected wave of grief, Lete began doing something she hadn’t
done in over two years—she began writing songs again. At first, the
songs that she wrote were a way for her to heal and deal with her
grief, but as the year continued, she found the act of songwriting was
useful in reflecting and capturing other aspects of her life as well.

From January to May 2015, the 21 year old worked on a set of songs in
her spare time after her classes and jazz ensembles at the College of
Idaho. In June 2015, she recorded demos of these songs and sent them
to her roommate—bassist, Ashton Jenicek—who suggested that they start
playing them in their basement and begin gigging locally.

Ana Lete began her musical journey in her hometown of Nampa, ID. She
began taking guitar lessons from Wayne White in 8th grade, and through
White’s influence, fell in love with guitar and the music of the
Beatles. Lete took lessons from White until she enrolled at The
College of Idaho as a Music Theory & Composition major and began
studying classical guitar with Christi Green. Throughout high school
and college, Lete developed a love of both contemporary indie music
and jazz. It was through being involved in her Vocal Jazz group at C
of I (ran by Dr. Marianne Saunders) that Lete found her voice as a
vocalist. Some of Lete’s favorite artists and musical influences
include the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bon Iver, the Fleet Foxes, Feist,
Tune-Yards, Wye Oak, and Billie Holiday.

From October 2015 to May 2016, Ana Lete, Ashton Jenicek, and
percussionist, Gavin Peterson, recorded Psychic Translation with
recording engineer, Rodrigo Coronel, in the College’s recording
studio. After graduating with a bachelor’s in Music Theory &
Composition, Lete spends her days drinking dry cappuccinos, playing
shows both solo and with a variety of musicians, teaching private
guitar lessons, songwriting, booking tours, and more.

Andrew Jameson

Though in his mid twenties, this young man has already played shows across two hemispheres and in a war zone. While not dodging bullets and working on military aircraft, active duty airmen Andrew Jameson fuses the heart of southern rock with the style and attitude of alternative into a style that must be heard to be believed. With only a guitar in hand he has played venues of upwards to 400 people and he is just getting started.
With his guitar on his back and his best friends by his side, he started as most teenagers do in the music world, in a garage with practice amps and a small space heater to keep from freezing to death. Born in Georgia and raised in Delaware he was prepared for a life on the road, before he knew what the future had in store. After playing a few house parties and graduating, he joined the U.S. Air Force, something he was destined for, until music called his name once again. Six brutal weeks of basic training, and a few months in tech-school he was on a plane to the volatile island of Korea.
His first major show occurred in S. Korea where, along with his tight-knit military following, played to approximately 200 people and almost made the N. Koreans surrender with a few stanzas of melancholy and hope. Well, not quite. After the conclusion of his tour in S. Korea he made his way back to the U.S. in New Mexico where he became an immediate success. Starting out at an open mic at a bar called the Lounge, he once again built a small but dedicated fan base. He played here regularly and after a few short months played to a 400 person crowd.
However, because of his career in the US Air Force, he has relocated once again to Mountain Home, Idaho. Thus far, a few open mic session have already turned into an invitation to return, this time, for his own show.

Andy Byron

With influences from Michael Martin Murphey to Gordon Lightfoot to Jerry Jeff Walker, this singer-songwriter delivers his music from the heart. The sound is country and the messages universal — living, dying, lost love, found love, family, kids. This music is about what really counts in life. After a detour away from music for over 20 years, in 2007 ANDY BYRON released his first CD of original material called, “SOMEWHERE OR NOWHERE.” The music delivers upbeat country to acoustic folk to driving country-rock with focus on meaningful lyrics. One track, “FORTY MILES TO SAN ANTONE,” spent 12 weeks during the Spring and Summer of 2008 on the EUROPEAN COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOC. charts peaking at #70. The band started out in a small town community called Hell. Hell was renamed to Fruitland, Idaho shortly after. The original 3 members (Derek, Jesse, Brett) had been together, destroying eardrums of the youth and the elderly alike since 2007. The band took a year break to get a dedicated studio and practice area setup, as well as collect some much needed equipment, until 2011. Upon reuniting after the short break, the decision was made to bring in a 2nd guitarist.

After auditioning Justin, it was determined that his influences and styles best matched the band’s. Shortly after Justin being brought on board, the band entered the studio to complete their first album. The album is currently being tracked in their studio.

The band’s main influences range from: Metallica, Pantera, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Daath, Amon Amarth.

Bank the Band

Stepping down from the stage in a syncopated rate to the sweat dripping off their faces, Boise, Idaho based Bank the band looks as at home here as they would in their native desert residence. Playing shows every night in 100% DIY fashion, the “eck brothers”, Dan Keck, Andrew Keck and Steve Pecka, have kept their 1998 Ford Clubwagon, dubbed “the green monster”, on the road from Billings, Montana to San Diego and Seattle to St. George, Utah, and everywhere in between. Guitarist frontman Daniel Keck saw the band as a vehicle for the ideas set forth by Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road” and started booking shows on weekends with friends in Seattle and Salt Lake City. The book portrays the beautiful ideas of freedom and independence that has been a motivation for other songwriters. Even Ben Gibbard, which Dan admits is a contemporary influence, cites Kerouac as one of his early catalysts to tour. From humble beginnings to weekend outings, the band saw that they could book full tours using the same principles set forth by networking with other regional bands. “There is a brotherhood among unsigned touring bands,” says Dan. “You are out there together on the asphalt and in smoky bars and you figure you can work together and have a chance at making it.”

A mind set to work hard no matter what the obstacle has made this quartet work. It seems cliche to talk about overcoming hardships like member changes and lack of funds, but in this day where the fuel prices are enough to make a band crumble, sticking together is the hardest part. The thing most people don’t know is that this band, noticing a sizeable increase in fans at shows everywhere they play, has been around for over four years. In that period of time they have self released an E.P., a full length that was self produced in Nashville just off of Music Row with Donny Boutwell and most recently “The Hope Inside Your Sleep” with famed producer Ed Rose in Eudora, Kansas.

It is a long road ahead but a long road is all right when following the footsteps of Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise. So far, freedom and independence have been the lifeblood of this band. Those inalienable rights give Bank the chance to make it big.

Bare Bones

The Bare Bones formed in July 2011. It started as a solo project for the work/writings of Chris Brock (Vocalist/Guitarist). He posted a video on facebook of him performing at the songwriters showcase at St. Chapels winery when Aaron Bossart (Percussion), who recognized him from high school, approached him and asked to jam together.

The two took off when they started collaborating and practicing in Aaron’s basement. Using makeshift recording equipment and cheap gear bought with a good chunk of their life savings they mastered the songs Chris had written in a matter of weeks as a newly formed two piece band. The Bare Bones had their first official gig at the Flying M Coffee Garage on Friday, August 19, 2011, and have been working hard as young, gigging musicians ever since.
Currently, The Bare Bones are composed of Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist: Chris Brock and Percussionist: Aaron Bossart. The Bare Bones bring together a fusion of genres like indie/blues/soul and alt. rock, and are influenced by a variety of groups like The Flaming Lips, The Black Keys, The Frames, Modest Mouse, Wilco, The Pixies, and countless, classic R&B soul artists like Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. Aaron, having a near virtuoso talent as a drummer from his ”metal” days, brings a variety of beats to the table, providing a strong foundation for Chris, with his talents as a songwriter and a wannabe bluesman to really test the limits of what a two piece can do musically.

Together The Bare Bones have brought a positive message to the Boise music scene, bringing waves of good vibes whenever they play live. They strive to always play a good show, make friends with whomever they meet and to always take responsibility for representing young musicians in a positive light.

Bellamy Rose blends Folk, Blues, Country, Rock, and Blue Grass to create an eclectic “fun” sound that is hard to resist. Besides Daniel is an indie-folk band from Atlanta. Aiming to inspire beauty, truth, and creativity, Besides Daniel writes songs about love, faith, daydreams, and adventure. These songs may reflect the musical influences of Bob Dylan, Iron & Wine, Pedro the Lion, Sufjan Stevens and Conor Oberst. The members of Besides Daniel are singer-songwriter Danny Brewer (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Susanne O’Day (vocals, keys, glockenspiel, melodica). ‘I am the Fall, You are the Spring,’ the most recent album, was released independently by Besides Daniel in 2007. Big O

Big O was born in Los Angeles California and raised in Caldwell Idaho. Listening to Hip Hop and Rap music since about 5th grade he was always fascinated by the way that words and syllables where made to flow and fit with rhythm and beats. Loving the way that this music artistically told stories, he began experimenting and writing his own poetry to simple beats. After attending his first touring concert (warped tour) his ideas of what music is and is supposed to be where changed. He shortly after started a punk and rock influenced band. Years later after feeling like he needed to experience the world he traveled and spent 4 months in Congo Africa doing charity work. Upon returning to the U.S.A. He didn’t want to fall into the same lifestyle he had, so he moved to the Oregon Coast for a year where he started writing Hip Hop music again, while maintaining everything that punk rock had taught him, this time with his own stories and outlooks on life to share. After a year on the coast Big O moved into Portland and recorded his first E.P. Moving back to Caldwell Idaho in 2013 he released his E.P. and began booking shows. Excited for his music he maintains a statement that he believes to be the heart and sole of his music. Hip hop is music, and music is freedom, and freedom is whats worth fighting for.

He is a singer-songwriter with his own image, influenced by Rock, Metal, and Stone Sour’s Corey Taylor. With dark clothing, eyeliner and black acoustic guitar played through an all tube half stack, it looks like a front man just stepped off a stage set for a rock band. That’s exactly what he did…

At thirteen, Bill picked up a worn acoustic f-hole guitar, playing around with simple notes and chords, and then learning some tunes from the radio. He signed up for a nine week guitar course in school, but he always wanted to play by ear and heart. His stubbornness kept him playing without formal education.

After taking the guitar lightly for years, in the winter of 2003, Bill went through a painful divorce and began putting his passive-aggressive emotions on paper while adding melodies. Then it just clicked. Bill realized he had a gift for tying the elements together. “It was like therapy I didn’t know I needed.” he says. One song after another poured out. He got a writer’s notebook, and amongst scratches and scribbles came “…something people need to hear. I know they can relate.”

Bill produced solo album “Passion Seeds”, and gave away about 150 copies. But the “band” were his keyboard and multi-track recorder. He decided to get some real musicians together, who later became Alternative Rock band Craving Dawn. The 5 piece group had some local success in Boise, Idaho, playing over 50 live shows in their first year. They produced as well, album “Learning Curve” and performed in Las Vegas. There were various releases such as the track Altar for Fears on a Midem compilation CD in France, and 6 Strings airing on “100.3 the X Rocks.”

Unfortunately, conflict arose within the group. Along with other issues, there were disagreements on strategy and direction, which at the end led to missed performance opportunities. In the fall of 2011, Bill left the band (who broke up immediately after) to set out solo once more, working on material to record and perform, and has since realized the beginning of his dream. ”The cover songs can go…the fans are now asking for nothing but his original songs at the live shows.”

Blue Mask is an Experimental band from Boise Idaho, We have been a band for about two years now. We are working on our first full-lengthed album “Barefoot in a Burning City” wich will be out March 2009. By mixing all sorts of different styles of bands together we have defined our own style. Our influences are: Deftones, Minus The Bear, Circa Survive, Incubus, Mars Volta, Cursive, Tool, and many others. Our mission is to release our album and raise enough money to be able to tour next summer. We love not only making music together but making art, We are all very good friends and very talented musicians, and have other bands that we are also in. Miles Fuller is now working on his own acoustic project, his cd “Omens” will also be out in March. Calley Bliss

”Oh boy. Are you ready for a can of worms? I have this theory…” Hearing singer/songwriter Calley Bliss say these words is endearingly par for her course. She’s the kind of person who’s always thinking, always drawing from what’s around her, always gleaming a positive lesson from any situation. The struggles with writing original music, putting a band together, practicing, performing and self-promoting can definitely take their toll, but Calley barrels through with style and grace. ”The stumbles that knock me down for a day or two, week or two, or even months make me run all the faster on the straight-aways.”
Calley currently acts as the Music Studies Coordinator and teaches voice and songwriting at Fresco Arts Academy in Eagle, ID. The school’s unique approach to hiring teachers who are active members in their professional craft has put Calley on a staff with instructors who actively populate the Treasure Valley arts, theatre and music scene.

Calley made the move to Boise from New York City, where she participated in the Brooklyn singer/songwriter scene for four years, during which time she self-released her first solo album, ”Pigeonholed,” which showcases her monster of a voice and infectiously catchy but smart writing in so many varied styles and flavors, it’s no wonder where she got the title of the album. She acted as the sole songwriter and arranger of all tracks, and co-produced it with Brooklyn producer and engineer, Jonathon Jacobi.

Calley has sung as a professional vocalist for a decade in styles ranging from Soul, R&B and Groove music, to Folk, Pop, and a healthy dose of Jazz, having attained her Bachelor in Jazz Voice from the acclaimed University of North Texas, funded by a Vocal Jazz Scholarship. She’s worked as a resident back-up singer for Maryland-based label Severn Records, a front vocalist for numerous and various club date bands, including New York’s Startlight Orchestras, a studio-ad vocalist for Dallas-based The Acxess Group, and has lead her own groups for private functions and live performances across the US, Mexico and Ireland.Her love of writing, which budded during her time at North Texas and flourished in the inspiring surroundings of New York, has brought her the opportunity to collaborate as a lyricist and pop song-writer with numerous friends and colleagues, most recently with Brooklyn-based guitarist and composer Cameron Mizell. Together they commenced a boutique production company, SingleSky Productions, creating music for commercial and artistic purposes from the conception and writing phase, all the way to the recorded, mixed, mastered, and ready-to-market phase. They found such musical soul-mates in each other, they also started a folk-pop band to satiate their artistic sides focused on simple and beautiful lyrics, melodies, and harmonies. The band, When We Were Six, debuted summer of 2011 at New York’s famous West Village venue The Bitter End, and plans to release an EP of the project and take it on a US tour are in motion for the summer and fall of 2013.

Calley’s story began in a typical Minnesotan home complete with hotdish, annual trips to the State Fair, and caring parents who readily taught her how to be ”Minnesota Nice.” She knew as early as seven-years-old that she wanted to ”be a singer” – her Whitney Houston backyard cover show easily won the hearts of her earliest fans. At the age of 10, she landed a spot in the Minneapolis Bel Canto Voices, an honor which was renewed three years in a row, including a role in the children’s chorus for Puccini’s opera ”La Boheme” at the Minnesota Opera. Other awards of her young performing years include ”Excellence in Jazz Performance” at the International Music Camp in the Peace Gardens, Lakeville High School’s ”Outstanding Performer 2002,” and a spot in the Minnesota All-State Choir for two years.

Carol Raye

Carol Raye was born and raised near Des Moines, Iowa. By age 13, she found some bebop recordings and began a love affair with jazz. A year later, Carol was “discovered” by the Valley High School vocal director and was blessed with four years of classical voice lessons and active performance. Opportunity knocked again with a gig as the vocal soloist for the University of Iowa jazz band. This flamed her passion for jazz. She made a home in Boise, Idaho, after a 12 year adventure of whitewater rafting, skiing, and sailing. Carol Raye has performed in various bands whose musical tastes ran from jazz and blues to rock and roll, with a splash of country music thrown in just to keep things interesting. In addition, she has recorded numerous commercials and harmony tracks for other artist’s recordings. But the jazz flame still burns. Most recently, Carol Raye is crooning Latin jazz in the poetic sounds of Brazilian Portuguese.

CRY is best described as a tension between sounds. Based in Oakland, the husband and wife duo consists of self-taught musician, Brian McCarthy (Casy & Brian, Dalmatians) and classically-trained performer, Kati Sheldon.

Polarity shapes CRY and the sound that results is unyielding. Post-punk, darkwave notions serve as a backdrop to lyrics drawn from works like Dante’s Inferno and The Egyptian Book Of The Dead. Brian’s unchecked learn-as-you play musicianship that’s captured the attention of East Bay’s warehouse scene is balanced against Kati’s polished experience in opera and musical theatre. And, in writing music together, there is the intimate tension that exists between spouses.

The music on CRY’s debut self-release uses only vintage Roland and Electro Harmonix equipment. The compositions were intentionally over-simplified to serve as a control element for the dramatic vocals. Dallin is a native Boise singer/entertainer that has been singing since 10 years old. Formed in 2012, decoded has already been through 20 members. Indecisive? Maybe.. The garage rock group has also reinvented its sound three times within that span.

Weathering the storm, frontman Derek Jordan and drummer Heather Miller were the only two remaining members when they set out to record the organic rock inspired “Topanga” EP, released on 11/12/13.

Rounding out the lineup, Ian McCulloch (guitar) and Amy Clark (bass) joined decoded in October 2013 and November 2013 respectively.

Dennis M Cooper

Whether its blues, country, big band, bebop, reggae, rock or easy listening, Dennis Cooper is there with the chops.
With a career spanning over thirty years performing with some of the finest musicians in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and Texas, Cooper branched out with his first solo release, “A Boy and His Harmonica” in October, of 2001.
After its release, the album reached the number one spot on MP3.com’s “Top Selling Jazz CDs” list on four occasions and every song was in the top three of its genre chart.
He’s won many awards during his career, including a first place finish in the diatonic division of the Yellow Pine Harmonica Contest in 2001 and a B.E.A.M. (Benefiting Emerging Artists in Music) award from the Jim Beam Company.
From the Oregon Coast to the Gulf Coast of Texas, Dennis has entertained at festivals and fairs in his one-man harmonica show.
“It’s not what people expect to hear coming from a harmonica,” says Cooper. “I play a very melodic style and it thrills me when someone in the audience leaves a performance humming or whistling part of something I played.”
In 2002 and 2003 Cooper contracted with Jon Gindick, author of “Rock and Blues Harmonica” as a Co-Instructor at “Jon Gindick’s Harmonica Jam Camp for Blues and Country in Irvine, CA and Austin, TX.
Winter 2006 was a busy creative time for both Cooper and his wife and partner Sandra Cooper.
Together they wrote and published the first in a series of revolutionary new harmonica instructional materials.
The first project, “Harmonica Boot Camp” , was written from an absolute beginners point of view. Dennis taught Sandra how to play the harmonica and she authored a compact and concise book that covers all the bases without the musical jargon. “Harmonica Boot Camp” also includes a 75-minute instructional audio CD.
Two new albums were also recorded during live performances while in Arizona.
“Crossharp Country, LIVE” is a collection of country and bluegrass favorites recorded as they were performed.
“Live From Paradise and Otherwise” features songs that are easy on the ears and includes several new compositions by Dennis.

Early Melodic Animals

EARLY MELODIC ANIMALS is an indie rock band with a touch of melodic shoegaze from Boise Idaho, started by Singer-Songwriter J.D. Parsons and former lead guitarist Daniel Hudson. In 2010 the Duo moved to the Northwest from the Los Angeles area to focus on songwriting. They isolated themselves in an inexpensive remote part of Central Oregon and saved enough to produce the 9 song debut ”DAY01”. The two then flew back to Los Angeles and hooked up with legendary percussionist Stephen Perkins from ”JANE’S ADDICTION” and Riz Story the former front man of the band ”ANYONE” for Bass and Engineering. ”DAY01” specialized in soaring, heartfelt alt-rock with a slightly serrated edge. In the fall of 2011 E.M.A. Hudson went on to start his own project and Parsons assumed guitar duties on the project. Emily Tipton Band

This eclectic trio primarily met while crossing paths working with their other projects and by collaborating at the Pengilly’s open jams in downtown Boise. Evergreen Machine

Formed in Boise Idaho in the spring of 2013 by singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Michael Gill, Evergreen Machine is just starting make a musical impact in the Treasure Valley. A bit about the founder, Michael Gill was raised in northern Wisconsin before going to Purdue University for engineering in Indianapolis Indiana. It was in Wisconsin that Michael first learned to love music and he began playing drums from the early age of eight years. Since first picking up the sticks, he has continued to expand his abilities into singing, piano, and guitar.

It was in college that he first began to write songs. His newfound appreciations for history, culture, and philosophy gave him immediate access to lyrical material that contains depth and emotion. As a result, the songs are heavily narrative with subtle links to current world dramas and common personal journeys. Growing up in a religious home, Michael was quite limited in terms of listening content. This limitation led to an explosion of musical discovery in his college years and an ability to appreciate many variations of musical style. This newness and exploratory nature is brought into the musical styles of his songs, which makes it difficult to place it in limiting genres. Some of the songs have a folk rock / bluegrass sound common to central and southern Indiana. Others are emotional, raw, and acoustic along the lines of Sufjan Stevens and Noah Gunderson. Still others are heavily rhythmic and more in the realm of alternative rock, yet still beautifully acoustic.

After moving to Boise Idaho in 2011 for his first job out of college, Michael began to spend more of his “free time” writing songs and playing music around town. From street corners to coffee shops and restaurants, he began introducing his music to the beautiful community of Boise. The culture in Idaho and the charming subcultures of Basque immigrants and long time Idaho natives have given him plenty of material to share their stories and values with the city and whoever else might listen. The songs had too much space and potential for Michael Gill to continue alone so he began to invite other talented musicians into his sphere and after much hard work, practice, and learning to lead a band, Evergreen Machine was formed. The band includes three of Michael’s own family. His sister, Heather Clark, provides harmony vocals that are pristine in their relationship to Michael’s own voice. Another sister, Stephanie Gill, is picking up guitar and adds a lot of accent and flavor to the overall sound. His father, Tommy Gill, has also joined the band. He has a long history playing keyboards and organ and contributes immensely to the atmosphere. Michael also became friends with a bassist at his day job and invited him to join. Dustin Gorseth has a real passion for the instrument and can both carry a song while providing detailed and complex lead lines. He’s a real talent. Michael also invited a friend and drummer, Jeremy Wiese, to provide the critical rhythm section to the music. Jeremy is accurate, dependable, and brings real emotion to his craft. For a band that plays this many different kinds of music, the artists involved have to be flexible, dependable, and creative. These are the musicians of Evergreen Machine. The band will continue playing live in Boise and is planning an album release in late 2014.

EZ STreet

EZ Street is a 5 piece band based out of Boise, Idaho that plays classic rock and blues. They will be adding in some of their own original material written by different members. All the members have been playing professionally throughout their lives in various other bands before forming the band known as EZ Street. EZ Street was originally formed by Mike Fagan on lead guitar and Jaz Fagan on vocals and rhythm guitar in 2002 and they performed all over Idaho and Oregon with other bands and as a duo. A second lead guitar player, Bobby Day, came on board in October 2012 followed by Steven McIver on drums and Ken Civian on bass. Faded Leroy

Faded Leroy is a Boise-based rock band formed in the summer of 2012. Blending aggressive rock and melody, Faded Leroy combines a high energy live show with well-crafted songs to take their listener on a journey. Driven by a solid rhythm section and two contrasting vocalists, Faded Leroy have crafted a sound all their own. After a year in the studio working on their debut album “Days Between Stations”, the band has shifted its focus to live performance and touring. False Idle

After three albums with uniSEF and sharing the stage with acts like Flatfoot56, Our Corpse Destroyed, and a short tour with FBS, Sef was approached by Thumper Punk Records to release a new project on the up and coming label. With that offer, False Idle was born. With the release of the 6 song EP “Hymns Of Punk Rock Praise” in September of 2010, the band was busting back into the scene. Sef called up his good friend, and former uniSEF band mate, Tyler Lewis for second guitar and mic-shredding duties. With the addition of the drummer from the EP recordings, Matt Lagusis, alongside former worship leader, Seth Warren on bass, False Idle finally had a solid lineup. With enthusiastic reviews from Indie Vision Music, Jesus Freak Hideout, and after making HM Magazine’s “Pick of the Litter” column in the November/December 2010 issue, the guys knew it was time to get to work on original music.

After months of writing and recording, the “I Refuse” EP was released in the spring of 2011. Producing a finely-tuned live show, the band started turning some heads.

With the eventual heavy-hearted departure of Matt from the band, the all-around musical magician, Phil Harris, who had previously filled in on guitar after Sef broke his wrist, came on as the full-time drummer. And with that, False Idle’s lineup was solidified.

But in the back of all of the band mates’ minds was the drive to write and record an album that would stand head and shoulders above anything else they had ever created. And thus, the debut full-length album, “Threat” was realized. With a growing confidence and surety in the overall identity and sound of the band, each member committed themselves to having a significant part of all aspects of the project. What resulted was a completely unique joint effort that incorporated the influences and ideas of every member. Phil said of the album, “We all have a pretty diverse taste in music and I think it reflects well in the writing. We tried to challenge ourselves and think a little outside of the “normal” punk sound, while still making a great punk record. In the end, I would say we accomplished just that, staying true to our sound but being able to branch out and give new things a try.” Sef added, “We all wrote on the album, so it has a lot of differences from song to song. Everything from 30 second super fast songs, to dynamic compositions, to mellow songs with a little bit of a country edge. Something for everybody…”. Having already been compared in sound to well-known bands like Anti-Flag, Strike Anywhere, xLooking Forwardx, and Rise Against, False Idle is poised to be the next big movement in punk rock. “Threat” boldly ventures into melodic anthems with the tracks, “Where Do We Go”, “In The Dark” and “Among The Dead” while sticking to its straight punk/hardcore roots with “A Tension” and “Sideswipe”. It even braved a folk-punk sound with the title track, “Threat”. But that’s not to say that the creation of this album was anything easy. “Some of the themes of the songs are deeply personal, and it was kind of new territory to put those kinds of insights out there”, commented Seth. It wasn’t just the lyrics that stretched the band as Phil explained. “I have never had to play the drums with that much force and speed before. I have always loved punk, but this is the first punk band that I have played with. I almost had to learn a whole new style of drumming that I wasn’t crazy familiar with.” In any case, “Threat” is a labor of love for False Idle, having worked hard through moments of excitement and frustration, all the while never losing a constant drive to produce punk rock that speaks of hope in a hopeless world.

In the summer of 2013, False Idle recorded an acoustic EP entitled “California Or Bust” as a way of funding their first venture to Southern California for the annual Thumper Punk night in September. The release was a compilation of acoustic versions of songs from “I Refuse” and “Threat”. With a more stripped-down sound, and an intimate feel, FI showed they could slow things down occasionally and get back to their singer/songwriter roots.

The concert at Thumper Punk night didn’t disappoint. In addition to an energetic show from FI, it also featured a reunion set from uniSEF. They RAWKED with Sef on guitar and vocals, Tyler on bass and vocals, and FI’s former drummer, Matt rejoining for the night to revisit the glory days with an awesome set!

Just to keep things interesting, FI has also started an Acoustic Cover Series that features members of the band playing their own acoustic covers of some well known songs. So far, they have recorded covers of songs from Social Distortion, Coheed and Cambria, Rancid, and The Bouncing Souls. With more to come, keep checking FI’s YouTube channel.

In the spring of 2014, the band started talking about recording a split. After talking it over, Sef approached fellow label-mates, A Common Goal, about being the other half of the split. The Boston-based band accepted and the writing and recording process began. Each band put forth two new original songs, as well as a cover of one of the other band’s songs. After watching the seasons fly by, the split has finally been completed! With a December 16th 2014 release date, both bands are staying sharp with these new songs.

In other news, False Idle played to a sell-out crowd for the Boise Music Festival this past summer. They had the honor of following their opening act, Train, on the stage. Actually, it wasn’t a sell-out crowd, and they didn’t play the same stage as Train (or want to), but it WAS fun! New FI fans who didn’t know they liked punk were getting into it as the band upped the energy and got the crowd moving. Maybe the main stage next year. Maybe not…

For the second time, Sef broke his wrist skateboarding and was out of commission for a few shows. As a generation and age-defying renaissance man, he just can’t say no to kickflips and nollies! But hopefully he will pass the skate baton to his rapidly improving and gutsy son, and live vicariously through him from now on, FOR THE GOOD OF THE LISTENERS!!!

But if it seems like there are no more boundaries to demolish for the punkers from Idaho, rest assured, it’s never really over. Amid their ever-changing lives, music is a constant. New music, added shows, and a general willingness to try anything once will keep you guessing about what to expect. Faux Bois (formerly mayerforceone), began in Brooklyn, NY 2000 as a bedroom folk project. Every once in a while Brian Mayer, the chief songwriter, would venture out of the shotgun apartment and perform at clubs or street corners. After moving to Boise in 2001 mayerforceone added members and underwent many changes. In 2007, mayerforceone began working on a recording with members of the Portland bands, Point Juncture WA, Bazillionaire, and Andy Combs. They helped with engineering and backing up a slew of new pop songs. As the recording project moved along, the need to reproduce the recording, on stage, required the formation of a live band. the mayerforceone academy of arts and sciences, is the latest incarnation featuring Caleb and Tori McKim, Scott and Kate Seward, Shaun King, and Trevor Kamplaign (ATTN).

Finn Riggins

Finn Riggins is an indie rock trio based in Boise, ID that travels the US representing Idaho and it’s growing music scene with their genre bending compositions and high energy live shows. Cameron Bouiss, Eric Gilbert and Lisa Simpson met while going to music school in Moscow, ID. After several years of collaboration with many different projects, they formed this trio and moved to Hailey, ID in August of 2006 and began writing and touring heavily. In the fall of 2007, Finn Riggins released their debut EP called A Whale, A Fish and soon after their debut full length A Soldier, A Saint, An Ocean Explorer on Tender Loving Empire an independent record label, art gallery, fine art and literature publisher, fashion collective, and handmade boutique. From that time through the beginning of 2009, Finn Riggins toured the US very heavily, playing over 300 shows in 35 different states. In 2009, Finn Riggins released ‘vs. Wilderness’ on Tender Loving Empire, right before embarking on one of their longest tour stretches across the country. Now back in Boise for a while, they are currently working on a new record with a tentative release date for 2012. In the meantime, they’re playing locally and regionally.

Fiona Luray

Fiona Luray is an American folk/pop singer-songwriter. Since her career began in 2010 she has released two albums (Rise from the Ashes, 2011 and Lion Heart, 2012), and is currently back home in Boise, ID laying down tracks in the studio for her third album.

Fiona has played countless venues and festivals across the US including Music from Stanley (2011, 2012, 2013), the Bioneers Festival in Scotland (2010), Boise’s Visual Arts Collective (2012), and Higher Ground’s Northern Exposure in Burlington, VT (2013).

Additionally, Fiona was featured on the 2012 Idahoho holiday album and placed in the top three in the 2010 Boise’s Got Talent, and took home the grand prize for the 2011 Redlands competition. She received media attention for her 2012 political mock music video, “Homophobic Senators Suck.”

Aside from playing the guitar, ukulele, and piano while singing melodic lines about life’s search for meaning (i.e. butter, wool flannels, and sometimes love), Fiona enjoys milking jersey cows, a good game of whiffle ball, and saying the word “nun chucks” to make herself seem as fierce as she knows she is, despite her gangly exterior.

You’ll hear the love of the shoe-gaze phenomenon of the 9os. In November of 2008, Victoria and Shlomo Kostenko had the idea to develop a band that would allow them to explore their passion for Klezmer, Sephardic Jewish, and Gypsy music. After experimenting with different styles and musicians, Fleet Street Klezmer Band was formed in July of 2009. Starting with Doc Woolf on bass, they added Matt Vorhies on accordion, and two of Boise’s most recognized and respected dancers, Cecilia Rinn and Za’Nyah Zi to complete their current lineup. Together, they have developed a reputation for their unique sound, spirited performances, and professionalism. Foreign Sons is a band birthed in Las Vegas, a city of lights and big name entertainers. Fueled by a passion for a new sound with classic influences, Foreign Sons has set their sights on melding the two. Freedom Machine

Freedom Machine was officially formed in late 2012, and two weeks later they played their debut show. Cody Roy Chapple (drums/vocals) and Timothy Patrick Smith (guitar/vocals)knew each other from the Billings, MT punk scene (circa 1996-2002) and both ended up in Boise, ID. Tim and Cody met Dustin James Verburg (guitar/vocals) and Keith Clifford Spencer (bass/vocals), who knew each other from playing shows together and drinking too much. An Idea was formed. FM set out to play punk music without the sub-genre filler– anything goes. Famous for their outrageous smoke-break-to-song-ratio, FM created a buzz among the Boise punk scene before even releasing any music blah blah blah… releasing single and b-side blah blah blah… (farting noises)

Frim Fram 4

The Frim Fram 4, based in Boise, Idaho, specializes in the classic songs and tunes of the Jazz Age. Taking their name from a number by the Nat King Cole trio, the Frim Fram 4 was founded in 2001, relying on the same instrumentation of piano, stand-up bass, vocals, and the exiting new sound of the electric guitar. Ghostbox was formed in the spring of 2013, originally as a 4pc. Jason, lead vox and guitar, has played guitar for 25 yrs, being influenced heavily at a young age by such artists as David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, and Jethro Tull. Prior to Ghostbox, Jason played in the short lived band She Loves Violence. Steve, bass and backing vocals, is a bit of a Boise legend….like bigfoot haha. A “true traditional” bassist with influences from all genres, from pop to metal. Steve has lent his talents to such bands as Basement, Brawl, Evologic, The October Tree, and big name Boises, Malachi. Steve currently pulls “double duty” in both Ghostbox and Malachi. Mychal, our beloved drummer. Mychal truly was the one that finally brought it all together. Mychal can play any style and any tempo that is required. Mychal and Steve played together in the band Basement before he moved on to more of a punk style genre with a band The Scurvy Bastards. Ghostbox has a very unique “multi-genre” feel, all the time keeping it dark and melodic. Ghostbox recorded a “rough demo” of 3 songs in December of 2013 and is looking forward to recording a full length in the spring of 2014. Ghostbox looks forward to seeing and playing for you.

Gina Jones was born in Idaho but raised in the south started singing at age 9 in a profesaional family band. Gizzard Stone

Ryan Wissinger has been a solo performer for 13 years now and is a graduate of the McNally Smith College of Music. After several years off, he is back on the scene and was featured this summer on Idaho Public Radio’s, Music From Stanley. He plays six- and twelve-string acoustic guitars, as well as the electric guitar and harmonica. Ben Brault is arguably one of Idaho’s fastest rising musicians. Playing regularly with the Jeremiah James Gang (Idaho’s top selling artist), his drumming has been an integral part of their success, and his young and incredible talent has taken him far in a short time. Rob Hill is one of Idaho’s hardest working musicians, playing with up to 4 or 5 different bands in any given week. While he is highly sought after, both as a musician and a teacher, his favorite band to play with (out of the many he has to chose from) is Gizzard Stone. He is, without a doubt, one of the best bass players in Idaho. Bernie Reilly, the front man and chief influence of Gizzard Stone, has been a professional musician for over twenty years. He has played successfully on both coasts (NYC & LA) as well as Europe. He has managed to release four albums, as well as sharing songwriting credits with national act, Michele Branch, and even appeared on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show with her. He is the consummate “Swiss Army Musician” and plays the violin, mandolin, guitar, cello, drums, and piano, all with a more than impressive skill level. Gizzard Stone is a tough band to categorize, as it plays in many genres including jazz, honky tonk, rock, reggae, country, and nearly anything else that intrigues us. It is truly a ‘box of chocolates’ type of band; you never know what you’re gonna get.

Lead singer and guitarist Jeff Roth is an accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist and performer. His passion is to explore and combine those musical influences and experiences into uniquely entertaining improvisational rhythms, sounds and songs.
Tenor saxophonist Phil Dean has been playing saxophone since before you were born. He actually has a degree (in temperature!) in music. This is why he’s a favorite everywhere from Texas to Berkeley. He has performed with Gene Harris at Ste. Chapelle Winery and The Idanha Hotel, on the Oregon Coast backing up Freddie Fender, in Sun Valley with Bruce Willis and the Heaters. Phil has performed with many bands in the Treasure Valley, playing anything from blues, jazz, rock and beyond.
Keyboardist Michael T. Spengler loves blues, rock and hip hop. Michael has been playing, writing and performing on guitar most of his musical career, until he recently took the piano up again. He has traveled for his former University in a music group and played with Chad Summervill in Boise. He loves getting to play out in town regularly and entertaining from his piano at home. His salt and pepper is kick ass, and his vocals are sweet as sugar.
Drummer Mike Goulder has been playing for over 25 years, the last 20 with various rock and blues bands in Boise. A love for rhythm and all things drum-related, Mike enjoys crafting beats for all types of musical genres. This guy’s crazy beats will force you to dance. Plus, he is probably the happiest.
Bassist Peter Billings thinks Boise needs way more funk, so he will probably slap you silly. With more than three decades writing songs and playing bass in original funk, rock, blues and psychedelic bands in places from Boston to San Francisco to Tokyo, he puts out an irresistible world music groove and puts the icing on the happy cake with some fine vocal harmonies.

Hecktor Pecktor is an Americana band which is a blend of Country, Folk, Blues & Rock based in Boise, ID. The band features the original tunes and father/son harmonies of Karl and Brian Peck with Larry Miller playing lead guitar, Perry Ekker on pedal steel guitar, and Doug Grant on bass and percussion. Brian Peck (Son of Karl Peck): Born in Weiser, ID and played in the band Smooth Audio Flow (SAF) in the mid-90s. The band played primarily in Boise, ID at events such as Lollapotato, Alive After Five, and the Bite of Boise. Karl Peck: Born in Weiser, ID and played in the band The Rocky Mountain Express in the late 70s and early 80s. The band played regularly at the Copper Lounge in Weiser, ID and many other venues in the Snake River Valley and Weiser Upper Country. Karl is the son of Lloyd Jack Peck who was also a musician and played fiddle, banjo, ukulele, and harmonica. Larry Miller: Born in Boise, ID and grew up in the Twin Falls area. Larry was a member of the bands Brown Sugar and Hotfoot in the late 60s and early 70s. The band Hotfoot played regularly at the Ridgewood Supper Club in Fruitland, ID. Larry is the son of an accomplished steel guitar player. Perry Ekker: Grew up in a musical family in the Canyonlands region of Southern Utah and started playing music with his father at the age of 8. High Desert Band

If you like toe-tapping acoustic music with an old-time flavor, you’ll love the High Desert Band from Idaho’s Treasure Valley. They play music ranging from songs that were heard on the American frontier to modern folk and bluegrass, along with a big helping of their own original songs. The group consists of lead singer Randy Helton who excels at flat-picking melodies on his guitar and tickling audiences with his comic songs and the occasional yodel. Randy is also a talented song writer who has won contests with his entertaining and humorous lyrics. Playing upright bass and singing lead and harmony for the High Desert Band is Cathy Bourner. Cathy’s background includes early influence by folk and western style music and in the mid 90’s began playing bass in a bluegrass band. She is a talented singer and is the heart and soul of the band providing a steady beat on her vintage 1939 Kay upright bass, with a signature cowboy boot foot on the bottom. High Desert’s founding member is Jerry Firth, singing harmony and playing mandolin. Jerry’s background includes almost twenty years of playing time in several bluegrass bands in Oregon and Idaho. He is an aspiring luthier, building the instruments he plays. He enjoys playing the variety of music that defines the High Desert Band. Rounding out the line up is the newest member, Kayleigh Jack, a rising young fiddler and singer-song writer from Boise, Idaho. Since childhood, Kayleigh has played classical violin, fiddle, guitar and sang for gospel groups, orchestras, and bands. Naturally gifted with a keen sense of music and memory, Kayleigh performs virtually every genre of music. Hillfolk Noir

Filtered through a half-century of folk, country and rock ‘n’ roll, and fed by family history and an affinity for acoustic mountain music, medicine show culture and Depression-era string-band blues, Hillfolk Noir’s peculiar roots gumbo is, like the carnival midway, at once inviting and foreboding. Look no further than 2008’s ”Diggin’ Songs” — a concept album of toe-tapping songs about grave matters — for proof. Hillfolk Noir’s contribution to this century-old language has been described as a dark, country-tinged, swampy-swingin’, hillbilly-delta-blues-ragtime word machine. Acoustic death-folk works, too. Or Junkerdash, the band’s invented name for its singular sound.

Travis and Ali Ward, the husband-and-wife half of Hillfolk Noir’s touring quartet (also featuring Mike Waite (El Dopamine, Lowbelly) and Jared Goodpastor (Boise Rock School)), grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho, a panhandle county seat near the Canadian border where ghostly echoes of the region’s settlers reverberate off the walls of the valley. “We make the music for ourselves because we love it; we are having a great time and hopefully that is infectious,” Travis says. “Music, especially live music, can be such a powerful experience for all kinds of people. Live music is a shared experience – a series of moments that can really change a person’s day or outlook. That being said, our music seems to strike an emotional chord with many people – perhaps because to pull off this really acoustic old-time sound, we sing and play our guts out. Every song.”

Hillfolk Noir has recently (Dec, 2010) released two new records — both on-location field recordings ”Live at the Old Idaho Penitentiary” is a multi-track recording of an eight-piece band performing live in an old prison block at the historical Old Idaho Penitentiary. ”Skinny Mammy’s Revenge” is a series of recordings made in living rooms and cabins. All of the songs were recorded around a single microphone to analog tape. Other notable projects include the aforementioned ”Diggin’ Songs,” the score to a film (”Ibid”) by Frozen River director/Oscar nominee Heather Rae and Russell Friedenberg, and a monthly DVD video subscription project with the Trey McIntyre Project contemporary dance troupe. This project will be released as a combined CD/DVD by the end of 2011. Hillfolk Noir is also nearing completion of a new record, release details still to come. Hillfolk Noir has performed with James McMurtry, Built to Spill, Bonn ie “Prince” Billy, The Devil Makes Three, Yard Dog Road Show, The Caleb Klauder Band, Gerald Collier, Heroes and Villains, Train, Jesse Dayton, the Dusty 45s, Neva Dinova, Neko Case, Justin Townes Earle, Deer Tick, Gourds, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band and tons of other great acts that you may or may not have heard of.

J.P.Whipple

Basing himself out of places as diverse as Portland Oregon , Arizona and Oostende Belgium , J.P.Whipple lives the life of a post-modern barefoot gypsy taking his one man – eleven piece – “orchestra” with him wherever he travels. Having all the energy of a full band with twice the charisma incorporating styles as incongruous as rock, gypsy-cabaret, country, and swamp blues. Whipple integrates them all into a unique blend he dubs “vagabond roots”. As would be expected, his songs echoes his weary wanderings and are filled with scenes of debauchery, blue collar angst and a slight hint of mysticism that comes from a lifetime of seeking. He accompanies his tragicomedy tales with his “trash” drum kit and whatever lead instrument that seems to suit the song. It could be accordion, Dobro, lap steel guitar, or banjo. Though one man acts are almost prosaic these days, it is rare to find one so dedicated to entertaining today’s short attention span audience. His performances are like Missouri weather. If you don’t like what you hear, wait five minutes.

Johann Helton

Johann Helton is a composer/guitarist/bassist and engineer residing in Boise, Idaho. In a distinct and varied career spanning more than three decades he has established himself as a musician respected by audiences and peers alike. The Idaho Statesman has described him as “…one of the area’s long-loved guitarists”. He performs widely as a solo artist and travels around the country performing with the 1960’s folk group The Highwaymen (as the only non-original member). Recent performing highlights include a joint concert with Judy Collins at the McCallum Theater in Palm Springs, California, a headlining appearance at Lincoln Center in New York City for their Roots of American Music Festival and a featured slot at the World Folk Music Association annual celebration in Washington, D.C.. A partial list of credits displays his breadth of accomplishments: 4 solo albums, appearances with the Smothers Brothers, Richie Havens, Luciano Pavarotti, Sally Field, the Boise Philharmonic, Opera Idaho, Jim Nabors, Nancy Griffith, Roger McGuinn and the Darkwood Consort. I moved to Boise late in 2013, after graduating from Idaho State University with a degree in singing. Since then, I’ve been tirelessly pursuing my musical passions and stable employment in anxious turns. I’ve been writing, recording, and performing songs on my own with my acoustic guitar since before I even went to college. I’m way into melody and structure and dramatic/romantic/accessible lyrics. I can’t bother myself to play anything but open chords anymore, but they’re working really well for me. I like to imagine that my style leans toward pop-punk, but I’m not really paying attention to it. I feel very, very uninteresting when I’m made to describe myself.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, his journey from there to Idaho provided ample source material for songs and stories which he started putting on paper in the last three years. Joshua Powell & the Great Train Robbery

“Joshua Powell and the Great Train Robbery” may not fit on a marquis, but the name suits the band just fine. Joshua and his folk band borrowed their brand from a 1903 silent Western and have crafted their sound in that sure-footed Americana tradition ever since. The crux of their music is in the storytelling – stories that embrace the fact that we are all human together. The band has two new releases: The Commonwealth EP, available for free on Noise Trade, and a new LP, Man Is Born For Trouble, available from digital outlets.

The band may have originated in the heartland, but there is something distinctly Southern about their songs. There is dusty peacefulness in the lulling folk that evokes comparisons to Iron and Wine and Fionn Regan, and an unmistakable grit that erupts like a bar fight when the band delves into their rockier side. Joshua and the band spent two years in Indiana perfecting this duality as they played every Midwest bar and coffeehouse that would have them.

Their self-produced debut EP, We All Say Hello, enjoyed immense exposure and success on Noise Trade in 2011, sharing the chart with acts like The Civil Wars and Young the Giant. Jumping Sharks

Jumping Sharks is a psychedelic-indie band based in Boise, Idaho. Since forming in 2010, we’ve played over 50 shows in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and California. These gigs have included opening for touring acts Mike Watt, Starfucker, and the BellRays. A recent review described our sound as ”dark dusty music . . . likely to make the devil jump up on a hickory stump.”

While you can hear the raw power of their 1960’s and 70’s influences, you’ll also hear modern dance music influences like hip-hop and disco-tech. These modern influences come primarily from the precise, pulsating beats fashioned by drummer, Jason Grazian. Set against the beautifully funky arrangements by guitarist Michael Bassett and the thick spacey groove from bassist, Kreed Kleinkopf, Jupiter Holiday creates some of the most catchy, booty-shaking music heard around these lands. Add the sonic dissonance of Shaun Palmer on the soul-searing lead guitar, and you truly have something exciting and unique.
History:
Jason Grazian and Mike Bassett have been playing together since they were in Borah High School Drum Corps together. In 2002, Jason met bassist Kreed Kleinkopf in a class they shared, where they spent more time talking about music than about the class material. Together, the three talked about forming a band for over 2 years. Finally in 2005, Kreed began to practice with Mike, Jason and a variety of other musicians until they met Shaun Palmer and solidified their line-up.
In 2012 Jupiter Holiday will record their first full-length LP. “I think the album will be built out of playing live mostly. We are looking to tour in the spring and summer of 2012 and this will help us develop our music spiritually and emotionally,” says Bassett. “We don’t know where the road will take us with this journey, but we’re going to try to make it epic.”

Just a Fluke

Just a Fluke is a four-piece alternative rock band playing originally written music that appeals to a diverse audience. The members are: Dylan Matheny (guitar/vocals), Kaylene Barber (guitar/ vocals), Nykita Davis-Baker (bass/vocals), and Isiah Fletcher (drums).
Barber and Matheny started writing music together in the summer of 2010. Later that year, in November, the band was officially formed with the addition of Fletcher.
The band began practicing several times a week, and signed up for Hot Local Knights, hosted by the Boise Venue. Out of the 40+ bands that participated, Just a Fluke was voted first place.
The band came to completion in April, when they found Davis-Baker.
Now seniors in high school, Just a Fluke is currently working on recording an EP, and playing local gigs.

Keith Anderson has been performing the music of the great Nat King Cole for more than 15 years. His voice is a mixture of sweet softness and power on demand. Kelly Emo

Kelly Emo has been playing guitar since the late 70’s. His interest was always focused around conservation and music.
He met up with Al Chidester (Fiddlin Big Al) five years ago. Al having a long history as a poet, writer and performing on stage. Al worked with Kelly to introduce him to the stage and helped him with the writing process.
Kelly then met up with Nashville legend, Ned McElroy. Ned is a song writer and publisher who received many platium/gold records and BMI awards. Kelly took writing courses instructed by Ned and recently recorded the album “I Can Hear The Drums” at Ned’s studio.
Kelly is an talented artist at heart, who has the passion for environmental issues and continues to put up a good fight for these causes—traveling to Washington DC to speak on behalf of Roadless Rule. He has spent the past few years writing music ; playing —-guitar—harmonica —-creating music and raising money for causes.

Kelly Martin

Kelly’s album titled “Another End” is singer/songwriter-based and influenced by a classical foundation. From 1998 to 2007, Kelly played in the band CrashFour and had many successes, including being voted Best Rock and Alternative Band in Boise Weekly’s Best of Boise, performing at SXSW, and being sponsored by Budweiser and Bose. For the past two years, Kelly took a break from performing and concentrated on writing and recording. “I got a little burned out from playing out so much. It has been nice to be able to just sit back and write and record without the pressure of performing,” says Kelly Martin. “Another End” took over five years to write. “This is the most personal album I have ever written,” says Kelly Martin. The album ranges from songs about love, hate, and anxiety disorders to Kelly’s most personal song “Should I” about his adoption and the decision of whether or not to reunite with his birth mother. This album has been a collaboration of many talented musicians from the Boise area. Becca Gourley, producer of “Another End,” has worked closely with Kelly and is also a former member of the band CrashFour. “I have been bouncing ideas off of Becca for years, so it just made sense for her to be such a large part of it,” says Kelly Martin. Rob Hill (Bass) and Scott Lindbloom (Drums) are from the band Stella and set the frame work for most of the album, while Josh Olswanger (Piano), Becca Gourley (Violin), Mark Doubleday (Cello), Dan Castello (Classical Guitar), and Russ Pfeifer(Organ) added the color.

Lee Penn Sky

It was a cold January day on a remote highway in Idaho. A young man stopped to help other travelers who were trapped in an overturned truck. As the man was working to rescue them, another car skidded off the road and struck him at highway speed. That man was Lee Penn Sky.

On that grey day, Lee almost lost his life and nearly lost his leg; what he did lose was his fear. Until this day, Lee had been a prolific songwriter but never stepped from behind the shelter of a band into the spotlight himself. The risk of stepping into the spotlight seemed to pale in comparison to nearly losing his life. Slowly as he healed he began to writing new songs and perform them himself. Healing from his severe injuries gave Lee time to figure out who he wanted to be as an artist, time to hone his skills and style.

Lee plays folk-oriented songs that span the Americana range, and are rooted in his Michigan childhood and the high-plains desert of Idaho, where he now resides. He has an affinity for Texan songwriters like Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and the late great Townes Van Zandt. While these artists inform Lee Penn Sky’s music, he doesn’t emulate his heroes. Instead, his style has been described as Counting Crows meets Greg Brown meets “a milder, slightly more melodic and less manic version of Joe Cocker” to give you “Acoustic Soul.” Prelude to Hindsight is Lee Penn Sky’s first offering as a solo artist. Songs from his album have been played on folk radio shows through out the United States and internationally, especially in the Dutch speaking countries. He has been well received in alt-country and roots music press. His song “Michigan” is being used commercially by Michiganmittens.com.

Lincoln Haury is a classically trained professional Violinist performing in and around Boise and the Treasure Valley. Lounge on Fire

Lounge on Fire is a raucous, rowdy, rambunctious repertoire of
raciness. Shaking dance floors since 2013, Lounge on Fire has been the
hairy-chested music child of Josh Gilmore and Nathan Norton, with a
rotating cast of members from many other Boise acts. Featuring chunky
rhythm guitar, quasi-rapped vocals, vigorous basslines, and a beastly
horn section, the sound of Lounge on Fire attempts to capture and
build on traditional funk and rock by infusing jazz, Latin, punk, and
hip hop rhythms and melodies.

This group has played with many local acts, such as Northern Giants,
Marshall Poole, Bread and Circus, and Thick Business, and has recently
opened up for touring acts such as The Suffers, Orgone, St. Paul & the
Broken Bones, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Turkuaz, The Polyrhythmics,
Ural Thomas & The Pain, Budo, Shaprece, and Otis Heat. It is also
worth mentioning that the band has performed in Treefort Music
Festival every year that the group has been together.

The performance of the show can be as much an attraction of the music
itself, and it often features the members of the band dancing, fuzzy
and relatively shirtless men, and the horn section spontaneously
running out into the crowd (and sometimes collapsing due to low blood
sugar) to give the audience a more personal experience of their sound.

I believe that music has a way to the heart. For the last three years, writing has been my passion, singing has been my love, and music has been my way of life. Marshall Poole formed in Caldwell, Idaho in 2010. The band members include Melanie Radford on bass and vocals, Michael Hoobery on percussion, and Rider Soran on guitar and vocals. Marv Jonesi moved out to Sun Valley, Idaho, from Chicago in 1996, then moved to Boise in 2000. He’s been a professional musician since the age of sixteen, and in Chicago was a staff producer/writer/singer/guitarist for a national jingle company for fourteen years, performing on over 2,000 sessions and creating commercials for United Airlines, McDonald’s, Sears, the original Glade Plug-In spot (”Plug it in, plug it in…”), etc., etc. He played in a zillion rock bands in the Midwest, California, and in Idaho. Early on he played with Jay & the Americans, Sam the Sham, Major Lance, & Tony Orlando & Dawn; in the 70’s his own band opened concerts for Sly & the Family Stone, Bob Seger, Steppenwolf, REO Speedwagon, Mike Nesmith (the Monkee), and assorted others. In the 80’s & 90’s he worked in the studio with Delbert McClinton, Jennifer Warnes, Patti Austin, Tom Paxton, John Sebastian, Rosemary Butler (backup singer fo r James Taylor, Jackson Browne, etc.), Janie Fricke, Lynn Anderson, Dr. John, Matthew Wilder, Eugene Record (of the Chi-Lites), and Joe Williams (the late, great singer from the Count Basie Band). He currently plays with several local blues/rock bands, records his own tunes in his home studio, and contemplates the music floating in and out of his navel.  Especially out.

Michael Gill

Michael Gill is currently creating music in the Boise, Idaho area. He has formed a small acoustic band of talented musicians and is currently entertaining fans and music lovers with narrative and introspective songwriting. His desire is to share the stories, beliefs, and history of the area to help connect the people with their culture. The lyrical themes span from more popular subjects such as love, heartbreak and change, to obscure yet touching stories about American history, local geography, and unwritten stories. The music finds its roots in bluegrass, folk, and more recent influences in the independent, neo-classical acoustic sphere. The melodies of his music and vocals span from low and soothing tones to high falsettos and impressive instrumental intensity and the harmonies of the band vocals are a perfect blend for easy and interesting listening. Michael began writing songs while in college in Indianapolis and learned to play multiple instruments and sing while growing up in the cold, dark winters of northern Wisconsin. “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Perhaps it is in aspiring to understand this musing from the brilliant Victor Hugo that the direction of Midnight Legs // Marathon Lungs has been influenced. Choosing to let their instruments be the main contributors in shaping the emotive aura they wish to create, they refrain from subscribing to the traditional vocals-prominent aesthetic used by most bands. They stand to prove that a guitar voicing, a bass chord, or a snare-drum hit can together convey what words fail to do. However, they don’t completely exclude the human voice from their music; it does sparsely grace their songs, which distinguishes them from other instrumental rock artists. The melodies sang and the words uttered over their compositions gently express what their absence would be incapable of. This approach and this sound make Midnight Legs // Marathon Lungs a unique experience for the listener, and a reflective moment where one may feel through music in a distinct and different way.

Moonshine & Mayhem was created by a group of close friends with a single goal in mind…to create high energy country music! The music that we play is expanding daily, and our new lead female vocalist brings an incredible stage presence, combined with powerful vocals that get people out on the dance floor.

Moonshine & Mayhem has been together in various forms for over two years, and our current lineup is great! The musicians in the band are highly experienced, some having played professionally for 40+ years (which means they’re OLD! But they can PLAY!!). MOSTECELO

Mostecelo is the darkly comic, and often serious, cross cultural musical project of J. Rebeca Suarez. Subtly using black humour, she sets biting lyrics to music that is modern, yet classicly rich. She hauntingly chronicles all the horrible, absurd, and wonderful things that happen in life with an ironic sense of comfort.

Born in Kentucky, Suarez was raised by her Venezuelan mother and musician stepfather from Idaho, where she grew up. Having artists and musicians on both sides of her family, she was constantly influenced and sometimes bombarded with cultural contradictions and crises of identity. She first realized she wanted to be a musician at the age of 8 when she saw a picture of Stewart Copeland behind a drumset and thought it was the coolest thing she’d ever seen.

Ever since, she’s been on a spastic, moody musical pursuit that has led her through various studies, bands, performance groups… and finally to Mostecelo, her first solo project. She has studied music and performed throughout various parts of the United States, South America, Africa and Europe.

Her influences include Skip James, Queen, David Bowie and Chopin, but her style is clearly unique. While each of her songs explores a new world, it is her voice that threads her body of work together. Her music breathes with a controlled temper and calming ease that defies the pervasive sense of loss and misunderstanding embedded in her words. It is music that holds you.

Nancy Kelly

Nancy has been honing her songwriting craft since age 17. She finds inspiration in musicians such as Carole King, Norah Jones and Natalie Merchant.

Savory vocals complimented by pictorial lyrics and a Yamaha Digital Piano, Nancy’s music is best described as Piano Folk, although you can also hear elements of jazz in some of her songs. Nate Fowler

With his new 6 song EP it is clear to feel the maturity that Nate Fowler has gained through his song writing and performance in the past 3 years. Recorded at The Mix House Studio in Boise, ID Fowler had the opportunity to experience working with great musicians such as Dave Goetter, who also co-produced the CD and Scott Pergande who mixed and mastered the album. “I want everyone that hears this album to feel a story within the music. I want each song to be an experience, a soundtrack to a real life story,” Fowler says about his sophmore EP. As a self-taught musician, Fowler never really considered the possibility of becoming a “real” performing and recording artist until beginning to dabble in home studio recording in high school. His guitar playing/songwriting began as an avenue of relaxation as well as an attempt to make sense of the adolescent turmoil he experienced due to the family move and the longing for the familiarity and comfort of home. In 2003 Fowler recorded his freshman project called, “The Crashings”. This 5 song EP was recorded and produced by Tyler Archer and Fowler in the attic of Archer’s Boise home. In 2003 Fowler jumped head first into the music industry with an eight-week music tour of South America at the age of 17. Just two years later, Nate headed for South West India on another eight-week music tour. Since then, Fowlers’ acoustic act has shared the stage with such acts as: Collective Soul, Hawk Nelson, Remedy Drive , The Listening, Sixteen Cities, and many others. With the experience of touring under his belt the maturity of songwriting began to develop within his music, which leads us into his new album. Fowlers’ ability to relate to any audience through his soulful, heartfelt lyrics of love, pain, passion and hope are present through his on stage performance. This aspiring 24 year old creates live performances that are memorable to his audience with his solo acoustic act or accompanied by his full backing band.

Nathan Polnow Acoustic Trio

Nathan Polnow Acoustic Trio is a 3 man band comprised of Nathan Polnow, on guitar and vocals, Jay Angst (drums), and Paul Davis (bass). Band members have played in local Boise bands, 12th of Never, Abrupt Edge, Sub*Vert, and cover bands Fluffer n Hummer, N.U.F.N., and Pop Cult Kids.
The band is brainchild of Nathan Polnow as a mix of cover songs and original songs, including songs from the members past original works. The band got started playing on Wednesday nights, a couple nights/month and hopes to start booking other venues on weekends (including Twin Falls) in the coming months.

New Transit

New Transit is a Boise, ID Americana/ Alt Country/ Rock band that was established in the fall of 2009. The band is currently comprised of; Sean Hatton(vocals, guitar, bass), Louis McFarland(drums, vocals), Dave Manion(Pedal Steel, guitar), Todd Sloan(vocals, bass, guitar) and Bernie Reilly(keyboard, vocals, guitar). The group plays mostly original material with a few covers sprinkled into the mix. To date they have released two full length LP’s. The first record “One” was released in 2011 and their sophomore effort “Country Music Dead” was released in the fall of 2013.
